Marlow Dental Centre
Consent Policy

At Marlow Dental Centre, we are committed to providing the highest standard of dental care while ensuring that our patients' rights and autonomy are respected. Our Consent Policy outlines how we obtain, manage, and record consent for treatments and procedures, ensuring transparency and      compliance with current regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Dental Health Regulations.

1. Purpose of Consent

Consent is a fundamental aspect of our practice. We ensure that all patients are fully informed about their treatment options and understand the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives before proceeding with any dental treatment. We believe in empowering our patients to make informed decisions about their dental care.

2. Types of Consent

We obtain two types of consent from our patients:

  • Explicit (Written) Consent: This is required for certain procedures, including but not limited to, treatments involving the administration of anaesthetics, extractions, surgical procedures, and any treatment involving significant risks.
  • Implied Consent: This is assumed when a patient attends a scheduled appointment and receives routine dental care such as examinations, cleanings, and other non-invasive treatments.

3. How We Obtain Consent

  • Initial Consultation: During the initial consultation, we will discuss your dental health and treatment options. We provide clear and concise information regarding proposed treatments, including the benefits, risks, and any alternative options.
  • Treatment Plan: Before proceeding with any treatment, we will provide a detailed treatment plan, including all necessary information about the procedure, cost, and duration. This allows you to make an informed decision regarding your care.
  • Consent Form: For procedures that require explicit consent (e.g., extractions, fillings, crowns, or orthodontic treatment), a consent form will be provided. This form will outline the specifics of the treatment and confirm that you understand and agree to proceed. We encourage you to ask questions about anything you do not fully understand before signing.
  • Ongoing Consent: Consent is an ongoing process. If there are any changes to the treatment plan or new information comes to light, we will inform you and, if necessary, request updated consent.

4. Children and Vulnerable Adults

For patients under the age of 18 or those who are unable to provide informed consent due to mental or physical incapacity, consent must be obtained from a parent, guardian, or a legally appointed representative. In these cases, we will ensure that the individual providing consent understands the treatment and its implications for the patient.

5. Right to Withdraw Consent

You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time during the treatment process. If you choose to withdraw consent, we will stop the treatment immediately. This will not affect the quality of care you receive or your future access to dental services. You can withdraw consent verbally or in writing.

6. Confidentiality of Consent

All consent records are kept confidential and stored securely as part of your patient record. Your consent will be noted in your medical records and will be protected under our Privacy Policy, in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

7. Emergency Treatment

In the event of an emergency, where obtaining explicit consent is not possible, we may proceed with necessary treatment to prevent harm to your health. In such cases, we will make reasonable efforts to inform you of the treatment as soon as possible.

8. Patient Involvement and Questions

We encourage open communication and want to ensure that you feel confident in your decision-making process. If you have any concerns, questions, or need clarification on any aspect of your treatment, we welcome you to ask our dental team. You’re understanding and comfort with your treatment are of utmost importance to us.

9. Minors and Special Circumstances

If the patient is a minor, we will ensure that consent is obtained from the parent or legal guardian. In cases where a patient has a special condition that might affect their capacity to provide informed consent, we will ensure that an appropriate representative gives consent on their behalf.

By reading our Consent Policy, and by booking or attending your appointments and receiving treatment, you acknowledge that you understand and consent to our process for obtaining consent. You further confirm that you have had the opportunity to ask any questions and seek clarification regarding your treatment.

If you have any questions or concerns about our Consent Policy, please do not hesitate to contact us at Marlow Dental Centre. We are dedicated to providing you with the highest level of care and respect throughout your dental experience.
